Our career in Mexico began in 1998. Volvo took over MASA (Mexicana de Autobuses), thereby acquiring a company that manufactured half the large buses produced in Mexico.
MASA operations consisted basically of the production of complete city, intercity and tourist models of its own design. In keeping with its respect for national traditions, regulations and customer preferences, Volvo had no immediate plans to import its own models, but instead opted to continue producing popular MASA models.
Due to increased interest in big, modern coaches built to European standards, Volvo decided to offer the 7550 series tourist coaches and soon after received a large order for 900 buses from the IAMSA GROUP.
This order sparked the investment of 23 million USD in the extension and modernisation of the MASA facility.
We have since secured a repeat order from the same customer, IAMSA.
This second order for 1800 buses confirms the strong position of Volvo División Autobuses in Mexico, and the confidence this customer places in us.
In the years following the takeover of MASA, Volvo has had a very prosperous period in Mexico. Production has increased and Volvo División Autobuses has earned the right to call itself the leading manufacturer of coaches in Mexico.
