Volvo 7700 Hybrid bus, available from 2009, is a modern, two-axle city bus with hybrid power - giving you fuel savings of up to 30 percent!

The bus is a parallel hybrid featuring diesel and electric power that can operate independently of the other. The electric motor is used to start and accelerate the bus up to about 20 km/h, enabling considerable fuel savings. At higher speeds, the diesel engine takes over, while also recharging the batteries. The electric motor serves both as a motor and a generator. When the brakes are applied, the retardation energy is transmitted to charge the batteries.

Hybrid technology is perfect in urban operations, characterised by frequent acceleration and braking, and also offers savings in suburban operations.

The electric motor provides maximum torque directly from start, which results in excellent starting and acceleration from standstill. Electric power is also engaged when idling. When the bus pauses at a bus stop or traffic lights, the diesel engine switches off. The bus then produces no exhaust gases, and its electrically powered auxiliary systems ensure very quiet operation.
