Noel continued, “Our new coaches are built on the proven Volvo 12.8 metre chassis, which added to the excellent driveability associated with the I-Shift system, means that these vehicles are perfect for our requirements”.
The five Volvo B9Rs are specified with Volvo 9.4 litre D9B diesel engine, which is rated at 380hp. They each have 61 theatre-style configuration seats with integrated three-point safety belts and leather headrests.
Also featured on the new vehicles is climate control air-conditioning, audio/visual system, an in-built CCTV system, alcolock system and WiFi capability. GPS tracking and fleet management system are fitted along with electronic destination equipment.
With a proud 100% safety record to maintain, Matthews chose the Volvo B9R specifically because it delivers class leading safety features as standard. These include the latest generation EBS (Electronic Brake System) with all round disc brakes, ABS, auxiliary braking, reduced brake wear and electronic stability control.

Matthews Coach Hire was originally founded in 1995 by Paddy and Mary Matthews. Today, the firm is still family run, operated in general by their three sons – Noel, Paddy Jnr and Gerard, along with their committed team of 65 employees. The company operates a daily commuter service along with specialising in private hire, corporate travel and educational tours for groups of all sizes, and has a dedicated tour coordinator.
