The new vehicles will operate on TfL route 135, which runs from Crossharbour to Old Street in London, via Canary Wharf, providing increased capacity and fleet renewal for Go Ahead London. Significantly, these will be the first Volvo B5LH Euro 6 double deck buses with ADL MMC bodywork to enter service in the capital.

Volvo parallel hybrid technology is well proven – not only in the UK but worldwide. Globally, more than 2,000 buses in 20 countries are now in service, consistently delivering better fuel consumption, lower emissions and quieter operation since the technology was first introduced operationally by Volvo Bus in 2009. A large proportion of those buses – more than 650 in fact – are in operation in the UK and the Euro 6 version of the Volvo B5LH is the latest development of the class-leading double deck.

This hybrid driveline has been designed to deliver consistent fuel and CO2 reduction of around 39% compared to a conventional diesel, as well as achieving the highest possible levels of reliability. With a passenger capacity of 87, the new double deck buses also offer excellent passenger comfort and everything in the driver’s area is set for superior ergonomics.

Commenting as Go Ahead London took delivery of the new vehicles, Engineering Director Richard Harrington said; “Go Ahead Group is the one of the biggest operators of Volvo Buses in the UK and Ireland - we appreciate the build quality and safety features that Volvo buses offer and we have also had good experience with their Euro 5 hybrid product in terms of in-service performance and reliability.

“Operating a busy cross city route is challenging on many levels, not least in terms of fuel economy, vehicle availability, passenger capacity and environmental performance. The new Euro 6 Volvo hybrid double decks covers all the bases, with the back-up and support we receive from Volvo Truck and Bus Centres in Croydon and Enfield also an important part of the equation.”

Volvo Bus Fleet Sales Manager, Phil Fletcher, said: “The 16 new buses entering service in London is a strong endorsement not only of the Volvo B5LH, but also of the complete package on which the buses will be supported. We have a very positive relationship with Go Ahead London and take pride in working with them to meet their exacting vehicle requirements.”

Volvo Bus Commercial Sales Director, Phil Owen, added: “In working with ADL, we have been able to introduce further choice for a long standing customer, the Go Ahead Group in order to meet its specific requirements on this route.”
