The Volvo B5TL will be powered by a new 5.1 litre 4 cylinder Euro 6 engine rated at 240hp producing 900Nm torque. The new, right-sized engine makes it ideal for city bus operation and offers a wide range of performance benefits. The engine will also be used in the Euro 6 versions of the best-selling double and single deck hybrid vehicles, ensuring benefits of commonality regarding aftermarket support.
Volvo will continue to offer both diesel-powered and hybrid chassis for the UK and Irish markets with the introduction of the Euro 6 engines.
Cooperation with leading body builder
The new double-deck city bus developed in close cooperation with Wrightbus, a leading UK body builder, and city bus operators has resulted in a significant weight reduction of the whole vehicle offering benefits of increased passenger loadings and reduced fuel consumption. This is despite the more demanding legislative requirements of Euro 6.
During development, customer’s requirements for easier access to components for improved maintainability has been addressed, resulting in lower life cycle costs and quicker vehicle repair times- vehicle up-time being recognized as one of the key operating requirements. Electric cooling fans and an electrically driven power steering pump improves safety on-board and also reduces the overall weight of the vehicle.
The B5TL will be introduced with the ZF Eco life 6 speed automatic gearbox, which has been designed to cope with the increased demands of Euro 6 technology.
“Improved Fuel consumption, lifecycle costs, maintainability and accessibility. This is what our customers need from their vehicles. And this is exactly what the new B5TL offers. We are very excited about the new product”, Ian Downie says, Product Director, Volvo Buses UK.
The new Volvo double-deck will be launched in 2013 ready for 2014 registrations. More details will be announced at the EuroBus Expo in Birmingham in November.
