Safety Zones automatically adjust the vehicle's speed to a predefined value in specific zones, enhancing safety by preventing manual speed increases. Drivers are notified when entering a safety zone, and the bus decelerates smoothly to the zone's speed limit. Operators can manage and edit safety zones in Volvo Connect and receive notifications for speed violations.
The drivers are notified when they are in a safety zone and the bus automatically adjusts the speed, even without intervention from the driver. Specifically, the gas pedal cannot increase speed if entering a safety zone with higher speed than the zone speed limit. The bus will smoothly decelerate to the speed limit set by the zone under control by the driver. Once the new specified speed limit is reached the driver can accelerate within the lower speed limit set in the zone. There is a possibility to use kick-down to override the speed limit if necessary.
Safety zones are managed in Volvo Connect. Fleet operators define speed limit areas in Volvo Connect, where the zones are stored, visible, managed and easily editable. The smallest supported zone size is an area extending 20 metres from the zone centre point in all directions.
Every time a bus enters or leaves the zone, you get an instant notification in Volvo Connect. If a driver violates the zone speed limit, or use the kick-down override, the operator will be notified via Overspeed started and Overspeed ended events in Volvo Connect, both in the Map tool’s Position History and the Report tool’s Tracking Report.
The updated Safety Zone service for newer vehicles now includes details such as the reason for the violation, top speed, and more in the Overspeed ended event. These details of the overspeed event are available in a new filter for Zones in the Parameter list in the Tracking Report.
In the Filter for Parameters in Tracking report, there is a new group for Zone parameters
The new parameters in the zone violation events are
Parameters for zone violation events
Duration of violation (mm:ss) | How long the the vehicle was overspeeding |
Speed limit (km/h) | The speed limit set in the zone |
Top speed (km/h) | The top speed that the vehicle reached during the violation |
Violation type | The reason for overspeeding, e.g. free-rolling |
The violation types for the Overspeed ended event are
Violation types for Overspeed ended event
Zone speed limit was exceeded | Reducing to limit at entry, i.e. the speed was too high when the zone became active |
Driver overrode the zone speed limit | Kick down violation, i.e. the speed limit was surpassed by the driver, using the kick down switch |
Free rolling | Free rolling, i.e. the speed limit was exceeded due to free rolling downhill
