Volvo Buses

At Volvo Buses, workplace sustainability is a continuous process that encompasses all our operations. We focus on four areas that create a healthy and resilient workplace: wellness, competence, inclusion, and safety. Together, they create a workplace that is built on care, responsibility, and long-term sustainability.

Wellness

A sustainable workplace protects more than physical safety. We support mental and physical well-being through access to assistance, education, and local initiatives that promote balance and fitness for work. Managers play a key role in early support, workload planning, and follow-up, while Volvo Group Pulse, our regular employee survey, helps us listen and respond to what people need.

Since 2022, the Santa Mente program in Colombia has provided practical support for employees and their families on mental health at work and in everyday life. By addressing stress, fatigue, burnout, anxiety, and depression, the program has helped reduce accidents linked to mental fatigue, lower stress-related absences, and strengthen belonging across teams. This shows how prevention and early support can improve both well-being and performance.

Competence

As technology and work roles evolve, we invest in reskilling and upskilling so colleagues can grow with the business. Learning is built into daily operations through structured training and mentoring.

At our Tultitán plant in Mexico, new recruits follow a clear path: two weeks of theory, one week of practice, and six weeks of guided work on the line. This helps people with limited experience become confident contributors while giving teams the skills needed for new products and processes.

In Sweden, Volvosteget offers another route into working life. This paid training program combines work, internships, and theory for young people aged 18 to 23 at several of our sites. It creates opportunities for young people while helping strengthen competence in the Swedish transport industry.

Inclusion

We aim for workplaces that reflect the communities around us. Our standards on safety, ethics, and human rights are non-negotiable, while our approach to inclusion is adapted to local contexts.

In Tultitlán, a production ramp-up became an opportunity to broaden recruitment by opening roles to applicants without manufacturing experience, utilizing skills assessment and pairing this with structured training. This created opportunities for people who might otherwise have been excluded, including 70 women hired across roles, most of whom remain with Volvo Buses today.

Health and safety

Safety is the foundation of how we work. Our ambition is zero accidents, supported by clear standards, robust risk assessments, and a culture of prevention. We track performance through accident rates, and we investigate every incident to learn and improve. From ergonomic improvements and clear work instructions to leadership routines that keep hazards visible, our focus remains on the health and safety of our employees.

The insights on workplace sustainability are based on an interview with Caroline Kassay, SVP People & Culture at Volvo Buses.
