Volvo 8900 Electric is a low-entry electric transit bus for safe, sustainable and reliable operation in city, commuter and intercity applications. It’s built on a common Volvo Group architecture for traction, energy storage and advanced driver assistance systems.
Volvo Buses has been at the forefront of reliable e-mobility for more than a decade. Volvo 8900 Electric is built on our multi-purpose platform for sharing architecture, components and subsystems common to the entire Volvo Group.
The range of an electric bus depends on several factors. Together with the operator, we analyse the energy need for each route, and guarantee that the needed energy capacity will be available throughout the contract period.
Volvo’s usable energy commitment
The Volvo 8900 Electric offers seat options ranging from space-efficient city seats to high-spec intercity comfort. Smart textiles make for long-lasting freshness and easy cleaning. All seats can be equipped with three-point seat belts, booster cushions and even integrated rear-facing child seats.
| Separate climate systems for driver and passengers |
| Battery powered climate system down to -5 °C. Optional HVO-rated fuel heater. |
| Heating controlled by a pre-set temperature curve |
In the Volvo 8900 Electric the interior is bright and spacious and the upgraded ventilation keeps the climate controlled. Visibility is very good, and the interior noise level is low. And a ramp facilitates boarding for passengers with physical disabilities.

The driver’s environment in the Volvo 8900 is probably one of the best available, with world-class ergonomics, superior visibility and a seat with all-day comfort. The adjustable dashboard features easy-to-read instruments and controls located logically, helping the driver stay focused and alert.
VDS is a unique Volvo feature that takes most of the effort out of driving a bus. It gives effortless manoeuvring in roundabouts and tight corners, and automatic return to the dead-ahead position. They significantly reduces the risk of injuries in the neck and shoulders, which helps reduce sick days and rehabilitation costs.
Volvo 8900 Electric offers an array of intelligent features that help the driver to drive safely and avoid accidents, injuries and damage. Smart sensors and advanced software detect events that could lead to dangerous situations, with an additional focus on pedestrians and cyclists.
Traction batteries are costly and resource-intensive. From a sustainability perspective there are good reasons to optimise the energy storage and avoid carrying battery cells as dead weight. The Volvo 8900 Electric can be equipped with up to six (five for two-axle version) lithium-ion battery units, each with a capacity of 90 kWh. Choosing a lower number of batteries not only reduces the investment needed, it also reduces the weight of the vehicle and thereby reduces the energy consumption. And you can allow more passengers.

More about Volvo’s approach to batteries |
Operating in hilly cities puts special demands on your buses. Volvo’s electric buses feature powerful Volvo electric drivelines and optimised transmissions, delivering power and driveability for safe operation in the most demanding conditions.

The Volvo 8900 Electric is equipped with Hill Start Aid, preventing the bus from rolling backwards when starting on hills. The power and torque make for safe starts even on a substantial uphill gradient.
The Volvo 8900 Electric can be specified with dual motors with an output power corresponding to over 540 hp. The result is outstanding uphill performance and acceleration properties.
Gear changing is automatic and software-controlled. During gear shifting, the transmission program uses the electric motor to synchronise input and output shafts to speed up and optimise the comfort of the gear shift.
Sustainable thinking pervades the entire life cycle of our vehicles. Our aim is to produce sustainable buses and coaches free from substances of concern, while respecting the environment and human rights. We apply a circular development process that improves our product’s sustainability profile. And we continuously reduce waste and emissions, optimize water use, and improve our handling of solvents, oils and chemicals.
