Goiânia, Brazil, has launched the world’s first fleet of electric bi-articulated buses in regular service, marking a major step toward cleaner and more efficient public transport. The initiative includes the inauguration of the Eletroposto Oeste charging hub and the rollout of 16 articulated and 5 bi-articulated new electric buses built on Volvo Buses BZRT chassis with Marcopolo bodies.
“This marks a transformational moment for high-capacity urban transport,” says Andre Marques, Vice President, Volvo Buses in Latin America. “Introducing the world’s first electric bi-articulated bus fleet in regular operation shows what strong partnership and a shared commitment to sustainable mobility can achieve.”
Located at the METROBUS S.A. depot, the new charging hub supports large-scale electrification, with 23 240-kW chargers serving up to 46 buses simultaneously. The new infrastructure delivers the reliability and operational discipline required for high-capacity electric BRT systems.
With its upgraded BRT corridors, new electric fleet, and advanced charging infrastructure, Goiânia and the public transportation RMTC network further consolidate their position as global references in sustainable urban mobility.
“Goiânia has a long history of pioneering mobility solutions, and we are proud to continue that legacy together,” says Andre Marques. “From the first bi-articulated buses in 2005 to today’s fully electric fleet, our collaboration has consistently pushed the boundaries of modern public transport.”
The project is the result of deep, hands-on cooperation with several partners including HP Mobilidade, GreenMob Capital, Suécia Veículos, Volvo Financial Services and the Volvo Buses team.
“Together, we are accelerating the shift to zero-emission transport. Our core belief Driving Prosperity guides every solution we deliver. These vehicles will improve the quality of everyday life for thousands of passengers and contribute to a more sustainable future for the region,” says Andre Marques.
