Birmingham and Dublin airports to go electric with Volvo Buses

Volvo Buses has been awarded the contract to supply six fully electric buses to Birmingham Airport in the UK. On top of that Volvo Buses was earlier this year awarded a contract to supply a fully electric bus to the Crowne Plaza Dublin Airport Hotel. This will be the first electric bus to go into operation in Ireland.

A greener partnership in Birmingham

The airport in Birmingham has plans to provide a truly ‘green’ transport system, and at the same time making savings on energy and life cycle costs.

“This partnership is a key milestone for us. We are always investigating new and innovative ways to reduce our carbon emissions and through the partnership with Volvo Buses UK, we can do just this”, says Nick Barton, CEO at Birmingham Airport.

The six fully electric buses are set to go into service in November 2019.

First ever fully electric bus to Ireland

The Volvo 7900 Electric contracted to Ireland will provide an efficient and environmentally friendly service for passenger transfers at Dublin Airport. The bus will go into operation at the end of the year on a route which operates between the Crown Plaza, Holiday Inn Express and Terminals 1 and 2 at the Dublin Airport.

“We’re really pleased that the 7900e has been chosen to provide services for these hotels in and around Dublin Airport and that it will be the first electric bus to enter operation anywhere in Ireland”, says Nick Page, Managing Director for Volvo Buses UK & Ireland.

Volvo Buses 7900 range

The Volvo 7900 Electric has been involved in a series of trials at locations around the UK, including Greater Manchester, Cardiff, Liverpool and Heathrow Airport. A fleet of eight buses have recently entered full service in Harrogate.

In addition to the all-electric Volvo 7900 Electric, the Volvo Buses range of electrified vehicles includes hybrid buses and electric hybrid (plug-in hybrid) models. All told the company has sold more than 4000 electrified Volvo buses the world over.
